Simple question: Do you know what you are trying to achieve (in your education or just in life in general) – and why? Really think about that question. It’s more important that anything. If you don’t understand what you’re trying to achieve or why you’re trying to achieve it then you have absolutely no hope of getting there. Why? Well where are you trying to get to anyway? You haven’t even defined it remember! So step one is to create a goal want to achieve and a goal you actually understand.
You may be wondering why you can’t “get motivated” or why you don’t “feel motivated” but if that sounds like you, you needn’t worry. You see, “getting motivated” is really just a myth. Motivation isn’t something you can turn on and off like a tap. Sure, you can watch a self-motivation video or read a self-help article like this one and feel full of passion and hope and have great dreams – and then all of a sudden you fall flat on your face. First of all, the 80/20 rule is not about economics or maths (even though it may sound like it), so let’s get that straight from the start! However, this rule does apply to your life (and everyone else’s life) so it’s very important that you are aware of it and can start manipulating it for your own benefit (in the way you study or in any other field you choose).
Pop quiz: What is your most valuable non-renewable resource? What is the one thing that you spend all day long every day and yet you can never get any more of it? The answer of course is your time. Do you know anyone that can create more time? I didn’t think so (but I was hoping you might!)
Do you scramble to get assignments finished on time? Do you find that the more things you have to complete, and the more the pressure builds, the more likely you are to engage in time-wasting activities? Do you find that things you really want to engage in – such as that really good diet and exercise plan you just found online (you know the one that absolutely 100% guarantees success) constantly fall into that endless and timeless pit of “things I wanted to do”? Well, forget all that. That’s the past. This is the now. It’s a new day and a new chance to get your life in order. Nothing better than a new day to bring true inspiration!
If you love to procrastinate then these are four words you will be very familiar with: “I’ll do it tomorrow.” While it’s true these four words may actually comfort you as you say them to yourself- knowing full well that a critical assignment date draws closer or your bedroom becomes messier and messier or you have precious little time left to study for that important exam – they also create a major problem. A major problem that could warp into a major meltdown! And major meltdowns are never pretty. They normally end in us slumping to the ground in agony screeching like the wicked witch from the Wizard of Oz, “what a world, what a world, what a world” or in the case of the scarecrow, “If I only had a brain!”
If you’re reading this then motivation may be a challenge for you. Perhaps you feel you have no drive, perhaps you struggle to get excited about what you do each day, or perhaps you just want to unlock the mystery of your own motivation levels. Well taking an interest is the first step. Do the words “if then” mean anything to you? Do you know how it relates to your motivation?
