Do-it-yourself activities are interesting and gratifying. When you do something from start to finish it is immensely satisfying to see the end product. But there are some precautions that you must follow while undertaking home projects or remodeling your home. Here are a few DIY safety tips:

Use a mask while working in dusty conditions or while sawing wood.

While painting keep room well ventilated and do not smoke.

If you are working with materials that give off toxic fumes make sure the room is airy and well ventilated.

Use good quality equipment while working. Use the right tools for the job.

Store tools in such a place that they are safe and that children and pets cannot reach.

While using knives cut away from you and after use keep them locked.

While fixing or checking electrical connections switch off the power and remove the fuse. Wear rubber shoes while working with electricity.

Keep a chemical fire extinguisher at home. Do not use water to put out a fire caused by electricity. It is best to use a profession for electrical and gas work.

Use a drill that has a plastic body, as it will not conduct electricity. Remove the plug from the socket while fitting parts. Do not wear loose clothes or jewellery as they might get entangled in the drill.

Ladders often cause a number of DIY accidents. Read instruction carefully before assembling a ladder, and assemble according to manufacture's instructions. Do not lean on one side as you may lose your balance.

Whatever the job on hand plan out your work carefully. Make sure that you can do it yourself otherwise hire a professional to do it. Do not be in a hurry to complete the job. It is best to ask someone to help you out.

If the job you are about to do involves the disposal of hazardous material then contact your local environmental health department for advice.
